What is Granny?
The horror-themed video game Granny features maze-crawling, puzzle-solving, espionage, suspense, and jump scares. You must solve the mysteries while avoiding Granny’s notice and praying that her superior hearing does not detect you. In order to defend yourself and escape from the ever-present Granny, you must assemble items, disable alarms, and acquire weapons. The game comes across as unfinished and unkempt in its entirety, with graphics that are overly rudimentary and controls that are even less so. However, the game may benefit from the limited graphics because they prevent it from being too realistic.
Gameplay Basics
The objective of Granny is to use a variety of objects over five (or six, if a picture puzzle is solved) days to flee the house while evading Granny. The player can escape by removing the locks on the front door, repairing the vehicle in the garage, or removing the locks on the vault door in the drainage tunnel.
Granny searches the house for the player, taking advantage of any noise they make and placing bear traps to impede their progress. If captured, Granny will knock out the player, ending the day and returning them to their original bedroom. Other environmental hazards, such as Granny’s spider and falling from the rafters, can also incapacitate the player. If the player is apprehended on the final day, a “game over” cutscene will play and the player will return to the title screen. The player can defend themselves against Granny in a variety of ways, including rendering her unconscious or temporarily blinding her with a variety of devices and weapons found in the home, such as the shotgun and pepper spray.
Tips for New Players
- Close all doors behind you (unless otherwise instructed), as it takes Granny approximately 1.5 seconds to open a door.
- Try not to alert Granny when she is far away so you can have more time to yourself.
- Keep weapons in secure and readily accessible locations, such as a tunnel, to make it easier to knock out Granny.
- Avoid the Basement, Bedroom 2, Living Room, and Middle Floor Secret Area at the beginning of the day or when Granny is about to respawn after being struck out.
- Explore the Upper Floor at the beginning of the game, as Granny mostly walks upstairs. If more time is required on this floor, drop items at the Main Door.
- If possible, avoid hiding in Chests, Cabinets, under Beds, or in the Car, as Granny will eventually exit the room in an unknown direction, and you don’t want to run into her. Instead, swiftly exit rooms and hide in other locations, such as tunnels.
